The Stickmen of Shalfleet – Woodland Whimsy in Our Village

If you’ve wandered through Shalfleet recently, you might have spotted some curious little characters at the side of the road and outside our pub. These charming Stickmen are not just whimsical woodland dwellers. They are the creative work of a talented local artist known affectionately as The Crafty Caulkhead.

Michelle, who lives right here in the heart of Shalfleet, was inspired by the Julia Donaldson book and began crafting these Stick People as a way to celebrate the natural beauty of our surroundings—and to inspire others to reconnect with nature. Made entirely from fallen branches, moss, pinecones, and other woodland treasures, each Stickman is lovingly hand-assembled and placed around the village for people to discover and enjoy.

What makes these little figures extra special? They’re not for sale. Michelle’s aim isn’t to profit, but to encourage people—young and old—to get outside, explore the countryside, and perhaps try their hand at making their own woodland friends.

“Take a walk, gather what you find, and let your imagination do the rest,” says Michelle. “There’s something magical about creating with nature—it’s calming, fun, and it connects us to the land we live on.”
